I got frustrated last month because Tweetdeck, a desktop based client (application) for me to follow my Twitter and Facebook buddies and do usual replying, tweeting, and direct messaging, was a pain in the bum because my Macbook seemed to be really slow when I was using it – sucking up the resources of the processor like there was no tomorrow. Cue Hootsuite, a web based Twitter client so no downloading to your desktop plus you can access it wherever you are, even if you’re not at your ‘puter.
Like Tweetdeck, Hootsuite has multiple columns making everything rather organised. Viewing multiple accounts where you can manage Twitter multiple profiles is a doddle (very confusing with Tweetdeck) with everything tabbed and easy to move between.
You can still group certain friends that you’re following, making it easy to ensure that you don’t miss the tweets of your absolutely most favourite friends. If there are several of you contributing on one Twitter account, you can manage the workflow easily plus you can report back on how much a tweet has been clicked. Feed your RSS to your Twitter stream in the settings so that each time your blog updates, it’s automatically picked up by Hootsuite and tweeted, plus you can use the integrated Ping.fm function to update all of your social networks with just one update – think Facebook, MySpace etc
Interestingly, you can also schedule tweets, so if you have things you want to share staggered out over a period of time, but don’t want to have to sit there all day tweeting, you can plan ahead with your tweets. I like viewing user info which gives you the quick lowdown at a glance and then you can click to drill down into a recent history of their tweets although on occasion this option can be a bit slow.
Also if you have one of those moments where you’re wondering what the hell a group of people are talking about, you can view threaded conversations by clicking ‘in reply to’, plus you can also get sound notifications amongst other little nuggets of usefulness.
I like it – it’s fuss free, it doesn’t disrupt the speed of my laptop, sits in my browser, and it’s made juggling my multiple Twitter personalities so much easier!

Yep, I’ve tried it on your recommendation and I’m pleased with it too.
If you use Firefox there is also a nice plug-in which sits very nicely in the bottom corner and just has little pop ups with new tweets like outlook does. It doesn’t switch between accounts though, so not so handy for people with several accounts, but a doodle to use and doesn’t require a separate tab/window.
